Nice post. It was great the way you recognized that you were going down a road that you didn't want to as a parent and stepped it back. Not everyone can do that.
This was a fantastic read. I had to read the whole thing out loud when my hubby was looking at me laughing. Thanks for sharing your adventures while parenting.
Omg I could have written this about my 9 yr old. We went through the same exact thing (minis the pokemon school) except I didn't have that magic epiphany.. 😭 I have a whole bin of half sorted binders and boxes that I've been saying for the last 2 years not to touch because they are for deck building and im not done sorting them (lost the hyperfocus)... except they never wanted to learn to build decks. 😞 I think it's time I dump them out and offer my kiddo a chance to just enjoy them. Thank you for sharing this. 💜
Great article; having been through two children's interests in Pokemon cards, I feel your pain and admittedly fell into similar traps. Now, as I look at an 8-pound, 2-1/2-foot tall homemade Ditto plushie, sitting on its own on the couch near my younger child's computer, beside books filled with various Pokemon drawings (lots of Eevee evolutions), it all feels worthwhile. Cheers!
An ex-girlfriend's son was huge into Pokémon. I spent a ridiculous amount of money to help him grow his Pokémon card collection. That was the year 2000. Who knew 24 years later it would still be a big thing. Wow.
I feel like I have the same issue with D&D and my kids. They’ve expressed interest and I’ve been waiting sooo long for them to be old enough to play similar games, that I have to physically restrain myself from signing them up for camps, classes and getting new miniatures….
I loved an episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond" where they experienced similar. He chased down a rare card for Ally & Grandma Marie schooled them all. Great reminder that what you think is important someone else may view differently
I went to the Poke'mon HQ in Tokyo right before Covid. I know nothing about it. I was with a friend. She is a grown woman and she almost had an orgasm.
What a fun story. Always a fine line between wanting her to be the best and letting her discover what makes her happy and brings her joy. That fact that she came up with the idea for categorizing her Pokemon by "friendliness" just shows that she is having fun, makes her happy and brings her joy.
That is a win win since seeing her discover that on her own must bring the widest smile to your face, bring you immense joy and spark happiness in you as well.
I'm a huge card collectors (Sports, not Pokemon), but my son has gotten into Pokemon, which has been really fun for us. We also play Pokemon Go together. It's fun, but there is a balance he doesn't understand just yet. But we are having fun together.
I play Pokemon Go once a day, and that's it--my wife got me into it, then stopped playing at all. My youngest daughter was into the cards and cartoon, but now she's busy teaching her own daughter to love Sailor Moon. So I'm the lone Pokemon person in the family now ...

thanks for sharing. I have listened to Third eye twice now. Enjoyed it. Be safe. Frank

Awesome of you to do so much for her and letting her find her own ways to have fun.

I will say as a guy who plays sports, Pokémon seems to be a hit whether you are a jock or nerd.

That’s an awesome story. The kids have never been into Pokémon but I can relate with other interests.

That's all that counts <3

Well done.
It's hard not to over help. Though to be fair Snorlax has slippers now. I didn't even know what a Snorlax was until Pokemon entered the house :)
Keep up the great work.
